Increase the multiple line column size for SharePoint document lib

I have added additional columns called “Comments†to the document library,
but allowed max size for this column is 255 characters even though data type
set is 'multiple line text'. I would like to increase the size to about 1000
characters.
What would be the best way to increase the column size? Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

I have already replied to this question with a suggestion for solution.
I replied to the identical posting in .windowsservices.development however.
Please do us all a favour and post a single message only to one newsgroup so
